Things we’ve been up to, things we like and other bits ‘n’ pieces.

why plant trees?

shonette, nick, fahd, greg and jeremy of the planeat team helping jose of we are waterloo plant a tree by morley college on westminster bridge road.

it is now accepted by the vast majority of scientists, politicians and the general public that man’s activities are significantly impacting our environment and in particular, causing global warming which is already making destructive changes to our climate. it is now also accepted that in order to avoid irreparable damage to our planet and its atmosphere we all, yes all, have to make changes to the choices we make and how we do things in our daily lives.

there is indisputable evidence that tree cover is one of the most effective ways of re balancing the needs of our environment by restoring fertility, stabilising erosion, storing carbon, eliminating drought, enriching and cooling the air, increasing biodiversity; the list of benefits goes on… which is why the UK government has pledged that the UK will increase its tree cover by 30,000 hectares per year in order to achieve the essential carbon net zero target of 2050 and make our nation’s contribution to arresting global warming.

but we are already failing to meet this target. more must be done. the Woodland Trust’s report on the value of tree cover and what needs to be done gives expert advice. https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/state-of-uk-woods-and-trees/

please don’t hesitate to pick up this baton and encourage your family, friends and employer to start planting trees to improve our island for all our children and their grandchildren.
